So You Want To Be A Hot Sauce Or Chile Pepper Reviewer? Avoid These 7 Pitfalls.

Pitfalls of Hot Sauce and Chile Pepper Video ReviewingDo you want to be a hot sauce or chile pepper reviewer?

You may feel a pull towards showing your spicy food passions on camera. It could be anything from trying scorching super hot peppers to sampling to reviewing hot sauces and BBQ sauces.

With today’s technology, its become far less cumbersome to get your mug in video formats all over the world, with social networks having full video integration. YouTube is still the major player, and along with a half-dozen other video outlets, all you basically need to do nowadays is open up the site or app, hit record, and you’re good to go.

Outside of technological considerations (more on that at the end of this article), what do you need to be successful?

Here are a few basic important things…

Help a Fellow Chilehead Out!

FB_IMG_1466532000659

Many of us old school chileheads remember the one and only Jonathan Passow. He and his wife Anna have recently moved from their native Ohio to settle down in Northern California to embark on their dream: run a small, self-sufficient, organic farm.

PS Farms is what they’re calling their new venture, and they’re looking for your help! This is one crowdfunding campaign that I can get behind and help promote, because Jon’s a great guy. Jon and Anna have a clear vision and plan for their farm, and much of it is laid out on their GoFundMe page, including chicken egg production and chile pepper cultivation.

Watch Jon and Anna describe their dream in…

Win Tasty Prizes in the “Show Off Your Meat” Video Contest!

Sauce-Goddess-Video-Contest

The sun is shining, which means it’s prime grillin’ time outdoors with family and friends! It also means tubs of ketchup, mayo, mustard and artificially flavored BBQ sauces go flying off the shelves. Stop the numbing of our collective taste buds! Don’t cook naked meat then try to cover it up with condiments. Instead, jazz things up with healthy and additive free Sauce Goddess spices and sauces. Show us how you stand up to the cover up and show off your meat!

Now through September 2, 2016, you can submit a video that depicts what showing off your meat means to you. The top 10 with the most votes will move on the final round where three winners will be determined by a panel of celebrity judges. There is no limit to the number of videos you can submit, but keep them all PG-rated so we can share with the world. Prizes will be given to the finalists with additional awards going to first through third place. For more information, go to…

“Crazy Hot” Documentary Trailer

crazy-hot-trailer-documentary-chile-peppers-chileheads-movieAbout a month ago, I was given a sneak peek of a trailer for a new documentary on chile peppers by filmmaker Eric Raine. He had traveled to 26 cities in 4 countries to showcase a wide swath of subject matter concerning our favorite capsaicin-filled pods, which included the chile pepper heat horse race, chilehead culture in general, and the phenomenon of hot sauce shows.

Back then,  I gave him feedback, which included my opinion that the trailer focused a bit too much on the drama surrounding the claims of Smokin’ Ed’s Carolina Reaper pepper being the world’d hottest chile. I personally have gotten out of the online (and offline) bickering about what pepper is the hottest. In fact, I think there is very little to no difference between most of these new “hotter” strains, and issued a chile eating challenge to anyone who is able to prove otherwise (and so far no one has been gutsy enough to take up the challenge). But I digress…

The trailer appears to be identical to the one I viewed back in June, with no less chile pepper drama removed or edited based on my suggestions. But that is not exactly indicative of what content is featured in the entirety of the movie documentary as a whole.

Overall I am exited about Eric’s effort, and he has indeed talked to…

Hot-Bites-007-YouTube-Flavor-Vs-FireIt was five minutes to recording time, and I gave up with this topic off the top of my head. I give you my humble thoughts on why flavor in hot sauce is always more important than the amount of heat, and how both hot sauce users and hot sauce manufacturers.

Jeesh, enough with the yellow chocolate nagahabascorpionreapermoruga hybrid #71 chiles. Or is it the peach chocolate nagahabascorpionreapermoruga hybrid #71 chiles? Give me a break…

Fatigued by the avalanche of taste-alike, burn-alike super-hot chile strains, crosses and hybrids, I offer a challenge to video reviewers and hobby growers: objectively tell the difference between them using only your taste buds. I bet 95% of you can’t.
