Weekly Firecast Episode #2 - Ott's Honey Blackberry BBQ Sauce and Weekend of Fire Preview
The second episode of The Weekly Firecast is here! This time out I try out Ott's Honey Blackberry BBQ Sauce for the very first time. I sample some on a spoon on camera, and then reconvene a few minutes later with a pulled pork sandwich and some sauteed chicken breast chunks to see how the sauce fares on those. In another segment, I speak a few minutes about the Weekend of Fire hot sauce show. Also on the video I debut my Resource of the Week.

How did this come about?
Well, one of the many undeveloped ideas I had spinning around in my head for the longest time was some sort of video show. I was trying to conceive of what could be the "ultimate" program for chileheads and barbecue lovers. Would it...

New Mexico Magazine Salsa Contest
New Mexico Magazine recently held a contest to figure out what was the very best salsa the Land of Enchantment state had to offer. 28 different brands pitted battle against one another as three distinguished judges "blind"-tasted salsa from all walks of life, including normal tomato-based varieties, smokey ones, fruity salsas and black bean & corn offerings.
The following video is a quick behind-the-scenes look at how the judging was done.
Who was the unanimous winner? It was none other than our friend Art "Xero" Weingaertner of Xerarch's Foods with his Nice 'N Hot Salsa. Congratulations! Go to Xerarch's website to order this or many of his other fine products.
The judges also gave three other New Mexico salsas "Notable" awards, and they all happen to be produced by another one of my favorite salsa makers, Santa Fe Seasons. Congrats to them as well.
Scott Takes on a Spoonful of Blair's Ultra Death Sauce
Just the other night I gulped down a spoonful of Blair's Ultra Death Sauce, the hottest sauce in his Death Sauce lineup. This "20/20" version of the extract-based Ultra Death has is 20% hotter than the normal version (which is roughly 800,000 SHU on the Scoville Scale, therefore this may be pushing 900,000+ Scoville Heat Units of tongue-scalding capsaicin.
Do I make it to the end without coughing, hiccuping or drinking a glass of milk? View to find out!

Video Review - Sailor's Swagger The Mighty Pineapple Hot Sauce
Here's another review done on camera of a surprising interesting sauce. The focus of this one is Sailor's Swagger The Mighty Pineapple Hot Sauce. There's also some early Sunday morning antics from my son throughout the video.

Tabasco TV Commercials From the 1960s
Here's a blast from the past: a pair of Tabasco Sauce TV commercials from the 1960s. They provide a decent overview on how to integrate Tabasco Brand Pepper Sauce into the drab American cuisine of the mid-20th Century. Fascinating to note that heavy emphasis is placed on Tabasco as being a "seasoning" in foods as opposed to just a "splash-on" condiment.
Commercial #1
The second one is different in some ways. What struck me was...

Parker's Commercial for www.ILoveItSpicy.com
Here's quick to-the-point commercial plug for ILoveItSpicy.com done by Robert "Parker" Bates. If you haven't visited lately (or at all), ILoveItSpicy.com is a video blog on which many, many online chileheads contribute, including myself. Stop by soon, and don't forget to wipe your feet at the door!
Video Review - Dragon's Breath Elixir Hot Sauce
As I mention in the video, I prefer not to do a review by only tasting hot sauce off a spoon. I also like to mix in it or employ it with food so that I could get more thorough handle on what it should and shouldn't be paired with. Besides, there are plenty of good sauces out there that don't fare so well by itself but...
Video of Mike and Diane's Gourmet Kitchen on Food Finds
Picture it: it was several years ago in the early 2000s. Early pioneering fiery foods blogs such as Hot Sauce Blog and The Hot Zone Online weren't around yet. The habanero was still considered to be the hottest chile pepper in the world (in particular the Red Savina, which reached in upwards of 577,000 Scoville Heat Units). Dave's Insanity Sauce still had the reputation of being the hottest sauce in the world. Blair Lazar had not yet put the flag atop the scorching summit of Scovilledom with his 16 million SHU reserve. Lots of fledgling hot sauce manufacturers were still doing quite a bit of business through mail order. And I personally was still obsessed with Van Halen during their "cone of silence" days when at one time I maintained three separate Van Halen websites (VHTrading.com, VHFAQ.com, and VHGuitar.com).
Then, there was a little show on The Food Network that was called Food Finds (whose reruns were seen on the Fine Living channel as recently as 2009). The program focused on one U.S. city or geographic region each episode and a few examples of the vast cornucopia of culinary delights representative of the area.
This one had its sights on sunny San Diego, California. Among the featured eats of San Diego were Chewy's Rugulach, the Julian Pie Company, and Mike and Diane's Gourmet Kitchen. Here's nearly nine minutes of edited video bits that showcased Mike and Diane Greening, who of course make the excellent Ring of Fire hot sauces. The video and audio quality is not the best, but it does give you a good glimpse instead their kitchen, their origin story and their philosophy for making sauce...
My Encounter with the New KFC Double Down Sandwich
Giving in to the hype of being an egregiously unhealthy menu item, my buddy John Nemec and I couldn't resist and we each grabbed one of KFC's Double Down Sandwiches for lunch today, which also happened to be the first day of it's chainwide releases. He videoed me while I gave my first impressions:
If you're unfamiliar with the concept, Kentucky Fried Chicken basically took a sandwich with pepper jack...
Hot Sauce Giveaway Contest Drawing
I wanted to have a contest for all those unable to visit the recent Fiery Foods and BBQ Show (I've been in the same boat many times!) because this website is for everybody in the greater chilehead community, not just those who get to attend hot shows all the time. So I decided to give away a prize pack for one lucky individual. This past Saturday I posted a video of myself holding up a phrase on a sheet of paper and to enter the contest all one had to do was simply e-mail me that phrase.
51 people submitted entries in the time allotted, and I put their names on slips of paper in a bowl for the drawing. Watch the video to see who wins...

Quaker Steak and Lube Triple Atomic Tough Wing Challenge
I know there are no Quaker Steak and Lube locations within a couple hundred miles of St. Louis, but there's enough of you that live in close proximity to one to make this very noteworthy.
The famous sports bar/wing eatery chain is having a contest to promote their new Triple Atomic Sauce. In a nutshell, if you make a video showing why you're tough enough for the new wings, and if your entry gets chosen you could win free wings for three years and a $500 gift card. Watch the video below for more details or go to http://www.tripleatomictough.com.
Toluca Gourmet Hot Sauce Ad
Here's a clever little Toluca Gourmet TV commercial that ran several months ago. It features their Jalapeno and Habanero hot sauces at the end.

Hot Sauce Bet on Ghost Hunters
I never watch SyFy's Ghost Hunters, but here's a short little aside after the hosts stumple upon some Dave's Temporary Insanity Sauce (a sauce that has only about 1/4 the heat of the classic Dave's Insanity Sauce):
