Weekly Firecast Episode 09 - Hippy Seed Company's Skobiyan and Yellow 7 Turkey Slap Sauces

This time around I taste a pair of excruciatingly hot natural sauces made by Neil Smith of The Hippy Seed Company.

The first sauce is Skobiyan F*****G Hot Chilli Sauce, a volcanic elixir containing the frighteningly hot Trinidad Scorpion chile peppers. The second is Yellow 7 Turkey Slap Sauce made with screamin' Yellow 7 Pot chile peppers. I take a tablespoonful of each and have come to the conclusion that they are among the top five hottest sauces I've ever sampled that didn't contain extract.

I also mention the BBQ Central Radio Network as the Resource of the Week.

Nick,

Both of these are very much all-purpose hot sauces. The Turkey Slap has a slightly more sweeter edge, but you can put both on pizza, eggs, Mexican food, etc.

I came to a realization while I watched this. It kind of dovetails into your article about whether or not the Chile/Hot Sauce community is experiencing a renaissance.

Correct me if I'm wrong but it seems that many years ago when some of the "Super" hot sauces were just gaining popularity you would rarely hear anyone speak about flavor with the gusto that they do today. Discussions were usually limited to notes on how much vinegar was in the sauce, whether there was any chile flavor and the sauce's heat level.

Reviewers today seem to talk about hot sauce as though it's a fine wine, and rightfully so. I started to think about this when you mentioned earthy, floral flavors. I've made note that many reviewers also describe the heat in terms of where it burns just as a wine connoisseur will describe where in the mouth certain wine flavors are received. I've done it myself in some of my reviews without putting much thought into it.

Just an interesting observation. That said, this is one of my favorite videos yet. However, I'm going to have to say that I'M the good looking one. Sorry, I'm a bit partial. :D

Cheers!

Your courageous taste tests save me the pain of tasting the bad sauces and points me to the good ones. Scott, you have become my "taste" utility. BTW, is there an app for that?

Can you let us know some of the other hottest sauces that don't contain extract? I find now that I'm eating sauces I used to find hot as though they're ketchup...I need to go up a level or two!

Thanks,

Matt
