The Ultimate Hot Sauce Showdown

Ultimate Hot Sauce ShowdownI think it's high time that someone does this: have the best pre-made hot sauces duke it out to see who is the undisputed best.

The seeds for having an "ultimate hot sauce showdown" were planted many months ago when the Huffington Post royally botched up an attempt to do a hot sauce "deathmatch" of their own by only listing a handful of mass-market sauces and ignoring quality products made by Mike and Diane's Gourmet Kitchen, Race City Sauce Works, CaJohn's, Blair's, Heartbreaking Dawns, Marie Sharp's, Intensity Academy, DEFCON and loads of others.

As I stated in the comments section of that Huff Post piece, (and I paraphrase myself) that just because something is popular or readily available doesn't mean it's the best or even good. The way the Huff Post "deathmatch" was handled was like doing a showdown of the "Best Burgers in Texas", but choosing only McDonald's, Burger King and Wendy's because they're hypothetically available on every street corner in the Lone Star State. In short, it was an almost unanimously collective facepalm done by the chilehead community because that website instead chose to cater to fair-weather fans of pepper sauces instead.

A few weeks ago, I was conversing with Adam Fehr of the Florida-based sauce co-packing company Endorphin Farms and he introduced the idea of doing a "March Madness" type of elimination tournament between hot sauces. I immediately agreed that this was a smashing idea, if not to make up for the shortcomings of the Huffington Post's deathmatch, but just to see what YOU, the REAL hot sauces fans, would consider to be the very best sauce on planet earth.

Let's Get Ready to Rumble!

Here's how it's going to work:

1. I want you all to list what you think are your favorite hot sauces in the comments section below. You can nominate multiple sauces if you would like.
If you are a maker of sauces yourself, you are more than welcome to nominate your own products if you truly feel they are world-class condiments.
Multiple nominations for a single product by the same entity (either using the same or different names) will be ignored as I can check email addresses and IP addresses.
Defunct sauces no longer in production can be eligible.
All nominations must be listed in the comments below. Any nominations offered on Facebook, Twitter, through email, or any other method of electronic communication will be ignored.

2. Everyone will have until Friday, February 8th to list their nominations.

3. The top 64 products (counted by number of nominations) will be chosen and put into a collegiate-style bracket system on or around Monday, February 11th. Head-to-head match-ups will then start and carry on in multiple battles throughout February, March and April.

Need ideas or inspiration? Feel free to look at the What's Your Top 10 Favorite Hot Sauces? post from 2011 if your brain requires a jolt.

Have fun everyone, and start picking now to ultimately will decide who's victorious once and for all!

This one doesn't get as much play as 1498 and 1841, but it's my favorite hot sauce of all time. Great flavor with excellent but not overpowering heat.

There are a lot of great sauces out there but II have to be a little biased and do believe in the sauces I make.....my favorites are Hellfire Hot Sauce's Evil Bastard, Pure Hell and Blueberry Helll......and Scott I hope you get a chance to try the Pure Hell And Evil Bastard I sent you sometime this year! Although a bit hot I think you'll enjoy them.....and if you have the Gourmet or Hogs & Kisses sauce(our mildest sauces) I'd love to hear what you think of them.... Take care and keep it hot!!!!

(Yet another) great idea, Scott!

Sounds like I may need to look into this Hellfire thing...

My picks are (for now, anyway):

Trappey's Red Devil (not technically "hot", but mighty tasty)
CaJohn's Happy Beaver
CaJohn's BICH (bourbon-infused, etc.)
El Yucateco Green
Salvation Garlic-Serrano Sauce

Probably will be more later, but off the top...

Benito's Hot Sauce in Hyde Park, Vermont has a line of sauces leaps and bounds beyond anything else I've tasted. Hot sauce should be more than heat. Benito's sauces have an incredible balance of heat AND distinct, delicious flavors.

My favorites are:
The Original Naranja, a bright, well-balanced carrot-based sauce with a great burn.
The Table Sauce, a rich, tangy butternut squash-based sauce that packs the perfect punch.

Ben is a hot sauce master. Let's see Benito's in the bracket!

Hmm - full disclosure: I freely admit that I posted the link to this page to my company Facebook page, both so my fans could vote for me an so Scott Roberts could benefit from the increased fanbase. I also nominated myself - I strongly believe in the quality of my products.

I do not think it's dishonest or ruins the spirit of this event at all. I asked my customers to post if they believed my product was worthy of being placed in the brackets among such great sauces.

That's the same thing Scott R has asked of folks, right?

For what it's worth, I also nominated several other fine sauce makers/sauces who I feel are all very worthy of being included in this.

Some products mentioned here with frequency I've not yet had the pleasure of trying, but if so many of their fans are so passionate that they're willing to go to bat for them, I'm absolutely gonna give them a try.

I sincerely thank all the Lucky Dog Hot Sauce fans who believe in my sauces enough to play along & take the time to post on my behalf. And I'm stoked Scott R hosted this thing as now I have a new list of highly recommended sauces to try!

Respectfully,

I think in anticipation of this, I'm going to order some High River and Zucky Dog sauces. Scott Z seems a class act and I really like his style and I will always support that.

It seems like a lot of the comments are reading like ad copy or crossing into actual promotion of the sales of a particular line and it strikes me as excessive at best. If people are that wildly enthusiastic, good on the sauce artisans, but when they come across like shills, it sort of turns the desire down to really jump on board...at least with me anyway...

I have no doubt the esteemed host of this contest has already considered that and will definitely keep it fair.

@Reyna - "Your Hot Sauce Company's "Al Gore I Invented Hot Sauce" - that's one of the funniest names I've ever seen. Hilarious.

All - I cannot believe that while posting on a day that I had Pho for lunch I omitted Huy Fong's original Sriracha chili garlic sauce. I used to think it was Vietnamese - the real story behind it is far more interesting.

I grew up with two sauces on hand at all times: Sriracha & Tapatio. There were others, but those were the staples.

My father is a wise man. Almost every marinade I make gets a couple solid squirts of Sriracha - for what it is, it's a perfect sauce. Every sauce named so far should fear Huy Fong in this bracketology - they're a dark horse to win it all.

Ladybird and Friends hot sauce is the best! All of the sauces are excellent but my favorite ones are Greta which is the sweet vidalia habanero, Sally which is the pineapple jalapeno and Zeus which is the King of Heat. I heard the cranberry glaze sauce they make is tasty. That is next on my list to try.

Hey N8, very boneheaded move on your part. We chileheads are a close-knit community. We happily welcome new people into the fold all the time and teat them like brothers and sisters, but start bashing and bad-mouthing people in the group, and it could really backfire on you. If you act like a classless jerk you'll turn people away from ever wanting to buy your sauces and your company. Think before you act, and show a little respect.

I've nominated hot sauces that are in my collection that I personally enjoy. Many from saucemakers I know and consider friends. Many of them award winners. Some deserve to be if they're not.

And you have a problem with that why? I'm confused.

It's no longer commercially available. You have to either make it yourself or eat at the East Coast Grill in Cambridge, MA. Nothing compares with the taste and the heat.

Wow. I just heard about this today. We are a small chilli company up in the far north of Australia in Darwin (Crocodile Dundee Country).

We have a small plot of a 1000 ButchT's that we make sauce from.

Lots of people like it. We don't enter competitions or anything, for us, its about our customers, not prizes. If you are short a contestant (It does not look like it though), I'd be glad to send you a bottle. Our hot ketchup is pretty popular.

Thom's Dia de los Muertos, Huy Fong Sriracha, Pepper Ridge Farm's BrainStrain, Golden Toad's Extinction Sauce, Jac's Tailgater's Cajun Fury extreme heat,... all top notch, not a complete list, if jerk sauce is eligible, Flaming Joes mild jerk.
