Review - Wendy's Sweet & Spicy Asian Boneless Wings

Wendy's Sweet & Spicy Asian Boneless Wings
Being a big fanatic of boneless chicken wings (and breast meat nuggets, tenders, and chicken strips), giving Wendy's Sweet & Spicy Asian Boneless Wings a try was a must. I'll spare you the story of the drive-thru employees' headslappingly annoying incompetence, and get right to the meat (pun intended) of the review...

Ingredients:
While I don't have a full, official list of what's in the sauce, Wendy's website says, "a spicy blend of Asian chilies, real pepper flakes and a hint of garlic."

Aroma:
Light and sweet, similar to a sweet and sour sauce you'd find at a Chinese restaurant, with a dash of red peppers.

Appearance and Texture:
Well, the drive-thru plastic container that held these boneless wings proved to be less than spill-proof. Even though this box was firmly level in the bottom of the bag, and the bag was carried upright, these still were able to leak out large quantities of sauce into the bag.

Upon opening the lid, the Wendy's employee failed to completely coat the top part of the boneless wings (see the first photo above). I don't mean to be nit-picky, but would the few extra seconds it takes to do this hurt you?

The breast meat chicken chunks that were actually covered looked beautiful in the semi-translucent, light-colored sauce. The pieces of red chiles highlighted the aesthetics and I also saw an occasional pepper seed.

Luckily there was a nice little pool of sauce on the left side of the container with which to dip the dry chicken, so all was well:

Taste:
Overall, pretty good. A bit more complex than just the aforementioned sweet and sour sauce comparison, this had a bit of wonderful heat and zip to it. The actual taste of the breading on these all-breast meat pieces was cheap and greasy, similar to that of McDonald's Chicken McNuggets, but the sauce's overall good flavor made up for this deficiency.

Heat:
There was surprisingly some substantial kick for a mainstream fiery food product. While it won't leave you screaming for a glass of cold milk, it should appeal to both chileheads and mildmouths. On a scale of 1 to 5 on heat, this might rate a 2 or 2.5.

Overall:
If you're at Wendy's and are not in the mood for a burger, it wouldn't hurt for you to give the Sweet & Spicy Asian Boneless Wings a shot. They come with 7 - 9 wings per order, and will run you $3.99 (your local Wendy's may differ in price).

I had 'em the other day and they're alright, but nothing to write home about. Scott's right about the taste of the nuggets themselves - they're only about a notch above McNugget level, and that's cause they're made with all white meat.

I love these wings! I have gotten them 2 or 3 times, and in the box I've gotten like 9 or 10 wings each time. Yes they are messy but they give you a fork. By far my fav thing at Wendy's.

I love these wings! had them many times. messy and sticky. I think they are delicious - they taste like real chicken, not McNuggets to me. And I too, usually get about 8 or 9 pieces, you got ripped with just 6, but they look preety big.
