Review - Uncle Red's Spicy Beef Jerky
Based out of Monroe, Georgia, Uncle Red's Spicy Beef Jerky is another fine all-natural beef jerky manufacturer that offers both regular Original and Spicy versions. I'm reviewing the Spicy jerky this time out.
Ingredients:
Beef, vinegar, water, soy sauce, corn syrup, molasses, wine, salt, spices, garlic, onion, caramel color, anchovies, tamarind extract, succinic acid, red pepper, sodium benzoate, black pepper, sugar, monosodium glutimate, ginger, and paprika.
Price:
$5.99 for a 3 oz. bag.
Aroma:
Has a very faint, sweet n' smoky scent.
Appearance and Texture:
Uncle Red's jerky is mostly cut into neat, long, thin rectangular strips. The strips were covered with an extremely fine powder while larger specks of black pepper and other spices rested at the bottom of the bag. Were the heavy spices supposed to cover the jerky? It didn't matter because the seasoning on the strips were adequate enough.
The jerky was on the verge of being a bit too tough, yet was still chewable enough to be satisfying. It was hard getting the first few bites torn apart with my teeth, but the fibers of the meat broke apart nicely in my mouth giving it a good, chewy finish.
It was also a tad bit on the dry side. Just enjoy this jerky with a cold soda pop or beer to help wash it down and you should be good to go.
Taste:
Uncle Red's Spicy Jerky's flavor is heavy on the dark, smoky tones. Detectable soy sauce and pepper gave it the majority of it's strong taste, while a dark sweetness provided in part by the molasses rounded out the flavor. Oddly, I found nothing particularly spicy in terms of heat about this jerky. I would compare the taste to teriyaki-flavored jerkys.
Heat:
0.5 out of 5. Barely any spice at all when referring to hotness. This is more black pepper and soy sauce than red pepper.
Label:
Gave me thoughts of simple, rural Americana. Features a farmer dog, a barn, and an outdoor smoker with three crosses on a hill all in front of a rising sun (or is it "rising son" to carry on with the Christian theme?).
Overall:
You know what? This stuff is pretty good. I just got out the rest of the bag while writing this review and chowed down the remaining pieces of jerky and they hit the spot. Uncle Red's may not be the best tasting jerky I've ever eaten, but it does may for one fine, meaty snack.
You can purchase a bag of either spicy or regular-flavored jerky at the Uncle Red's Jerky website.
