Review - Trappey's Red Devil Cayenne Pepper Sauce
Red Devil is manufactured by Louisiana-based company Trappey's Fine Foods, Inc., who has been producing tabasco chile-based consumables since 1898. I decided to give their signature hot sauce a try, and was pleased to discover a fine condiment worthy of mention alongside of heat kings Tabasco Sauce and Frank's Red Hot.
Ingredients:
Distilled Vinegar (Water, Concentrated Vinegar), Red Cayenne Pepper, Salt, Guar Gum, Xanthan Gum, Ascorbic Acid (To Retard Spoilage).
Aroma:
An almost-perfect blending of vinegar and cayenne scents. It's pure and simple, and not overpowering.
Appearance and Texture:
Like all Louisiana-style hot sauces, Trappey's Red Devil Cayenne Pepper Sauce is a red and expectedly watery condiment. Only the tiniest pepper flecks are present in the mix.
Taste Straight Up:
What I admire about Red Devil is that it's one of the nicest balancing-act of flavors I've ever come across in a hot sauce. If you're a fanatic of the Louisiana-style genre, I'm sure you've encountered at least one that relies too much on vinegar to sharpen up the taste or too much salt to zest things up. Not Red Devil. They give ample room for the cayenne peppers to shine in their own spicy way, and with the salt and vinegar, produce a triple marriage of spicy glory.
Taste on Food:
The sauce was generously splashed on some Mexican Lasagna. Even with a heavy application, Red Devil didn't overpower the inherent flavors in the lasagna and complemented them rather well. It provided nearly enough heat to make this an all-around delicious meal.
Suggested Uses:
You name, Red Devil can go on it - eggs, wings, pizza, popcorn, chips, or sandwiches. This is as versatile as a runny hot sauce can be - just splash some on and you're off to the races.
Heat:
Just enough to give any bland foods you have a much-needed kick. 1.5 on a scale of 1 to 5. If there was any minor complain at all about the sauce, it's that it could have used a half-point or two more heat.
Label:
4 out of 5. I liked this one, mainly for the black background with the high contrast red lettering of "Red Devil" on top. The dark green "Trappey's" and "Pepper Sauce" are somewhat hard to read from a distance. Image-wise, the label is adorned with a little devil and a large graphic of three cayenne peppers.
Overall:
Trappey's Red Devil Cayenne Pepper Sauce is tried and true and yet another tasty offering that you can't go wrong with. You can find it just about everywhere in the U.S., or at numerous online retailer such as Amazon. A 12-oz. bottle will run you three dollars and some pocket change.
