Review - Tostitos Sweet and Spicy Summer Salsa
Most folks in America are probably introduced to salsa by consuming one of the national, store-bought brands, a la Tostitos or Pace, but don't usually go much beyond that. With the universe of diverse flavors offered by other salsa manufacturers just begging to be discovered, it's refreshing to see the big guys release something other than the same-old same-old. Tostitos has concocted a Sweet & Spicy Summer Salsa which I hope is one of the first steps in opening up new tastes for fans of regular salsa.
Ingredients:
Tomato Puree (Water and Tomato Paste), Diced Tomatoes in Tomato Paste, Jalapeno Peppers, Onions, Raspberries, Blackberries, Sugar, Red Bell Pepper, Chipotle in Adobo (Chipotle Peppers, Tomatoes Paste, Vinegar, Salt, Natural Flavor), Fire Roasted Tomato Puree, Vinegar, Salt, Garlic and Natural Flavor.
Aroma:
4 out of 5. Not much different than the regular Tostitos Medium Salsa, with perhaps a tinge of smokiness and sweetness.
Appearance and Texture:
4 out of 5. It looks darker and browner than a typical Mexican-style salsa, no doubt due to the darker-colored chipotle peppers and berries. Sweet and Spicy Summer Salsa is as just as chunky as Tostitos' normal stuff, which is good enough for me.
Taste:
5 out of 5. This salsa rocks. Similar to its aroma, it's very, very close to the regular-flavored salsa. It's got delicious touches of sweetness that make it ever-so-slightly-different. I didn't bite into a chip covered with Sweet and Spicy Summer Salsa and envision blackberries and raspberries, but did appreciate the subtle fruit flavor that made this a complex amalgam of deliciousness.
Heat:
We all know that a "Medium" label by major food companies routinely translate to "relatively bland", but in this case there was a touch of spice after eating several chips loaded with the salsa. One out of a one-to-five scale.
Label:
4 out of 5. Festive-looking, it looks like a picture of a salsa ingredient kaleidoscope with tomatoes, jalapenos, onions, and raspberries
Overall:
I hope this salsa can find a way to stay. It's currently released and positioned to be a limited-time variation. My hopes are that will gain a big enough audience that the Frito-Lay company will consider keeping this on permanently, or make it a regular summertime food fling.

I really hope they expand this flavor and keep it around throughout the year.

This stuff is freaking AWESOME!!! I dip my vegetables in it and i just can't get enough of it.
I really do have to stock up before the 99 cents store stops selling them. Oooo maybe i'll buy a case of it, since you can do that now. (gasp!)
