Review - Tony Legner's Cat 5 Hot Sauce Food Polish

Tony Legner's Cat 5 Hot Sauce Food Polish

Tony Legner's Cat 5 Hot Sauce Food Polish. Now just what in tarnation is "food polish?" It comes in an irregular 8 oz. bottle and looked like it may be a dip, condiment or even a wing sauce. I've seen it numerous times at hot sauce shops and food shows, and now it was finally time for me to make the plunge and discover what riddles lie beneath its glass exterior...

Ingredients:
Seasoned Rice Vinegar [Rice Vinegar (Water, Rice) Sugar, Salt], Vinegar, Water, Peppers, Carrots, Onions, Salt, Spice and Natural Flavorings

Aroma:
3 out of 5. Very odd sensation when I took a whiff of Tony Legner's Cat 5 Hot Sauce Food Polish. It seemed like there was a very subdued amalgamation of malt vinegar, carrots and onions. Nothing too terrifically strong or headache-inducing, and it was similar to many carrot-based liquids I consider to be among my favorites, yet at the same time playing in someone else's sandbox.

Appearance and Texture:
3 out of 5. This has a medium-thick consistency and coarse texture almost like a rough picante sauce. Its light brown tint made it more of a mystery as to what peppers were contained within this concoction. The liquid was accented with specks of black spices, light-colored onion and carrot shreds, and had a clumpy body when dripping down the inside of the bottle. In conclusion, the look wasn't incredibly appetizing but I dug the texture.

Taste Straight Up:
4 out of 5. As soon as I stick some in my mouth, there was an unexpected sweet vegetable sensation. It was heavy on the carrots and medium in the onion department. A layer of rice vinegar held the patchwork together, and then a second or two later the heat arose from the sauce and peaked just south of medium. The taste was consistent throughout, although with subsequent eatings I was able to pick out more of the individual veggie components and black pepper in the aftertaste. What exact pepper Cat 5 Hot Sauce employed was still an enigma to me.

Tony Legner's Cat 5 Hot Sauce Food Polish Taste on Food:
4.5 out of 5. Not knowing exactly what "food polish" was (it could mean anything, actually), I just poured some of this on the next supper I had: tacos. It faired remarkably well, neither under-performing nor overpowering the food. It supplied just the right amount of burn for a night that I wasn't in the mood to make my tongue throbbingly numb. The flavor of Tony Legner's Cat 5 Hot Sauce was simply scrumptious.

I had also tried it on pizza. Being one of the ultimate hot sauce litmus tests, pizza can prove be one of those make or break foods, and this Food Polish passed with flying colors.

Heat:
2 out of 5. This offers just enough sizzle to make it exciting, and the heat quickly wears off until you refuel your tongue with more of this.

Overall:
Top-notch stuff from Tony. I have a feeling this won't appeal to everyone with its offbeat slant on carrot-based flavor but I liked it anyhow. Comes in an 8 oz bottle and can be found in many hot sauce and specialty stores nationwide.

Nice job, Scott, you covered everything and explained in full detail, this is a real service to us avid saucers out there.
If I may suggest one thing, maybe add a nice touch by probing the product people on how they came up with their name. I say that as I relate to Cat 5 as a Computer networking cable...just something to think about, thanks and keep up the great reviews, RBQueMan

the "Cat 5" name refers to a cat 5 hurricane (as pictured on the label) - the taste is so good that it 'blows you away'
