Review - Sweet Baby Ray's Hickory and Brown Sugar Barbecue Sauce
Everybody's got their favorite "go-to", everyday use sauces. One such sauce in my kitchen is Sweet Baby Ray's Hickory and Brown Sugar Barbecue Sauce. Sure, it may be one of the most commercially-available condiments currently out but that doesn't cut down on it's tastiness one iota.
Ingredients:
High fructose corn syrup, vinegar, tomato paste, modified food starch, salt, pineapple juice concentrate, natural smoke flavor, spices, caramel, sodium benzoate as a preservative, molasses, corn syrup, garlic, sugar, tamarind, natural flavor
Aroma:
4 out of 5. Good overall aroma. Not dominant. Sweet, smoky, all-around pleasant, and just plain lovely.
Appearance and Texture:
5 out of 5. The color is slightly lighter and redder than other Kansas City-style sauces. It's think, rich, yet very pourable from the squeeze bottle and spout. It has no problem sticking to your meat yet it's easy enough to spread around to coat surfaces evenly. It's smooth and very few specks of spice are present.
Taste Straight Up:
5 out of 5. When I first tried it, I thought the Original version of Sweet Baby Ray's was great but a bit too artificially sweet due to the high fructose corn syrup. This Hickory and Brown Sugar version remedies that by adding a slight darker tang and a more "natural"-tasting sweetness. If you're comparing this to other other brands, this sauce has less of a heavy bluster than a KC Masterpiece and more of a tomato-like quality along with a taste of molasses goodness. In this genre of BBQ sauces, Sweet Baby Ray's may be the best you'd find anywhere.
Taste on Food:
5 out of 5. Hamburgers, hot dogs, and smoked sausages were on tonight's menu. I prefer it when the natural flavor of your food doesn't get masked by the sauce; Sweet Baby Ray's complies by working flawlessly to compliment the taste of each piece From experience, I can attest that Sweet Baby Ray's Hickory and Brown Sugar Sauce works with everything - spare ribs, chicken, beef, pork steaks, pulled pork, as a dipping sauce, as a sandwich topper, and more. There's nothing you can't do with this stuff.
Heat:
0 out of 5. Possesses no heat to speak of.
Overall:
Sweet Baby Ray's motto is "This sauce is the boss" and I find it hard to argue with that bit of marketese. This delicious condiment can be found at supermarkets nationwide and costs around $2.50 to $4.00 for an 18 oz. bottle. It's also available 28 oz., 40 oz. and 80 oz. sizes for heftier needs.
