Review - Superchile Fire! Salsa
Those who know me well know that I love a big, hearty, chunky salsa. Yeah, I eat and enjoy salsas of nearly every consistency and level of ingredient processing. But when it comes to your good old fashioned Mexican salsa, nothing to me beats a thick, ultra-chunky blend of tomatoes, peppers, and onions. Although they obviously didn't have me personally in mind, Superchile has aimed for people like myself who at the end of the day will eschew the drippy, wimpy salsas in favor of a dense one chock full of fresh veggies. I've given their Fire! Salsa a try, and because of its superb texture and taste, it has since grown on me and become one of my favorite salsas.
Ingredients:
Tomatoes, Onions, Jalapenos, Chile Peppers, Sweet Green Peppers, Lemon Juice, Garlic, Cilantro, Parsley, Tomato Paste and Sugar.
Aroma:
4 out of 5. So fresh-smelling you'll swear someone had made this in their kitchen just a few hours ago. A great blend of tomatoes, peppers, cilantro, and onions.
Appearance and Texture:
4.5 out of 5. Fire! Salsa is beautiful and colorful. And if you couldn't guess from what I had wrote a few paragraphs above, this is very, very chunky stuff.
One thing to point out is that nearly all of the ingredient pieces are different shapes and sizes, There's huge nuggets and tiny bits of peppers. Large and small cilantro flakes, along with longer "stem" pieces. There are lots of nice-sized choppings of garlic. Varying sizes of tomatoes. What's my point with this? The fact that with every scoop of a tortilla chip, you're going to get a different texture in your mouth. It doesn't effect the flavor too much (more on that later), but it happily prevents this from being a boring salsa.
Taste:
4.5 out of 5. Some of the best traditional Mexican-style salsa I've consumed. It has a consistent, uniform taste throughout, so nearly every bite is as good as the last. What's the taste like? Just imagine taking an admirable but generic salsa like Tostitos or Old El Paso Mild Salsa, dumping some in a bowl, and then adding your own cut-up peppers and cilantro to jack up the taste quotent by a power of 10. It's got a terrific base of tomatoes, lime and onions and becomes dimensional with the other ingredients. The actual flavor is strong on cilantro (but not to an overpowering degree), hot chiles and jalapenos. The other ingredients wonderfully fill in all the gaps, nooks and crannies making this more than just a hot pepper-fest. It's complex, well-rounded and just plain delicious.
Suggested Uses:
What can you do with this salsa? Any party/snack usage is a given - whether it be a dip/scoop for chips or mixing with nacho cheese to create salsa con queso. Mexican dishes would be sure to benefit, as would simple American food like burgers and hot dogs. Meats like steaks, fillets and chops probably wouldn't go so well with Superchile Fire! Salsa; go with a smokier or sweeter salsa if you're cooking those items for a meal.
Heat:
Be forewarned, as this stuff packs a small punch. An easy 3 out of 5 heat scale, the fire from this gradually burns the inside of your mouth (in a good way, of course). But since this salsa is so top-notch, you'll continue chomping down on this and tortilla chips until half the bag of chips is gone. If you're not a fan of fiery foods you may wish to steer clear of this.
Label:
3 out of 5. If you couldn't tell by the photo, it shows a cartoon "super hero" red chile pepper flanked by an onion and a green bell pepper standing a city street and given a parade-type welcome. Cute, I guess, and somewhat festive.
Overall:
I found Superchile Fire! Salsa to be highly addictive. Superchile is produced by G&M Farms, an up-and-coming company based in Morrisville, NY that produces milder versions of the Superchile salsa in addition to hot sauces and jellies. The salsas come in 16 oz jars can cost $6.50 plus shipping at http://www.gandmfarms.com. Fire! Salsa is really tasty stuff and a must-try for fans of flaming hot salsa.
