Review - Scovilla's Hot Gourmet Fiery Bandito Chipotle Gourmet Barbecue Sauce
Make no mistake, anyone anywhere in the world can make a great sauce. This goes to say that Americans can produce dynamite Asian-style sauces, Brits have come up with nice Caribbean-style condiments, and in this case, Germans have produced a blissful American/Mexican-style chipotle barbecue tonic. Scovilla Hot Treats, from whom I had reviewed their surprisingly good Wild Habanero Hot Sauce, have done it again with another offering from their Hot Gourmet line, Fiery Bandito Chipotle Gourmet Barbecue Sauce.
Ingredients:
Habanero peppers, carrots, chipotle peppers, onions, papayas, salt, lime juice, acetic acid, passion fruit juice, citric acid, xanthan gum, garlic
Aroma:
4.5 out of 5. Bright, sweet and onion-y, with heaviness on the fruitiness with a touch of smokiness.
Appearance and Texture:
4.5 out of 5. Fiery Bandito boasts a medium consistency that's easy to pour while having excellent clinginess to food. It's brown in color, and while it's not "chunky" per se, there are a good amount of pepper pieces, seeds and shreds of carrots and onions. Whether you use this for the chipotle aspects or as a BBQ sauce, this is really a good looking sauce.
Taste Straight Up:
4 out of 5. A tart and pungent blend of onions and habaneros hit me straightaway while undercurrents of sweetness coated my tongue. I sensed an immediate heat from the chiles, and within a few seconds the delayed burn from the habs kicked in while the distinctive smokiness from the chipotle peppers pushed forward; this was an odd sensation but a pleasant one.
Taste on Food:
4 out of 5. I poured a healthy coating on a charbroiled cheeseburger with nothing else on it except dill pickle slices. It proved to be quite tasty. While neither being a run of the mill barbecue sauce or an average hot sauce, Fiery Bandito combined the best of both genres and solicits a generally good, smoky, sweet, onion-y and spicy elixir.
All kinds of grilled and smoked meats would benefit from Fiery Bandito Chipotle Gourmet Barbecue Sauce, as would some Mexican foods that could use a classic tangy and smoky jolt.
Heat:
2 out of 5. The heat, as I have already described, is up front and center. It's got the bluster of habaneros and chipotles but yet never rises above a medium, chipotle-level burn. If you've got a timid mouth or are just in the mood for something smoky and warm, this would fit the bill.
Label:
4 out of 5. Colorful and eye-grabbing.
Overall:
There is nothing spectacularly original about this sauce. In my opinion, Scovilla is building up a really admirable track record of devising sauces that just flat out work.
