Review - Red Hot Robin's Chipotle Mango Hot Sauce
Many of you already know "Red Hot" Robin Leicht, otherwise known as Flaming Joe's better half. Joe himself has done well in the chilehead world with his jerk sauces and pepper jellies, and has very recently debuted a buffalo dust powder (review to come soon), but now Robin is proving her fiery meddle with her own sauce, Red Hot Robin's Chipotle Mango Hot Sauce.
Ingredients:
Chipotle, Cayenne & Habanero Chile Peppers, Fresh Mango, Garlic, Onion, Fresh Lime, Vinegar, Black Pepper and Salt.
Aroma:
4 out of 5. Reminiscent of a lightly smokey barbecue sauce - sweet, marginally tangy, earthy and smokey.
Appearance and Texture:
3 out of 5. The epitome of a medium consistency, with a reddish-brown color with spice specks and chile seeds. Chipotle Mango Hot Sauce pours and splashes easily yet has great clingability to your grub.
Taste Straight Up:
3 out of 5. Splashing some heavy drops on the back of my hand, I lapped up the goods and was surprised to be hit with a relatively weak, almost watered-down fruit-like flavor. Rather quickly the chipotles come on strong with a ton of smokiness, along with a burst of vinegar and complimentary shots of onion and black pepper, making this an overall smooth sauce. Again, it was strongly resembling a BBQ liquid with a deep hot sauce and vinegar punch, and not like a typical mango hot sauce with a smokey edge.
Taste On Food:
4 out of 5. First, I gave Chipotle Mango Hot Sauce the old college try on French bread pizza. Spectacular!
Then several squirts were given to some red beans and rice with smoked sausage. Not bad, and it added a wee bit of needed heat.
Lastly, healthy amounts of the sauce were splashed inside of a standard homemade beef, bean and cheese burrito. Very good, and added a lot of flavor without drowning it in excess heat.
Heat:
1.5 out of 5. There's not much at all in terms of capsaicin-fueled fire. It kicks like a typical chipotle pepper sauce, with not much added burn from the habs and cayennes that I could detect. This product is great for those who can't deal with screaming tongue fires and would make a terrific low-heat table sauce for the hardcore heat freak crowds.
Label:
4.5 out of 5. This would make a killer tattoo. A long, green chile pepper is being pierced by a dagger and surrounded by flames, while a robin holds a "Red Hot Robin's" banner.
At the time I received my sample bottle at ZestFest from Robin, she was still in the process of deciding between three different color schemes for the bottle and shrink wrap - all pink, a pink/black gradient variant, and the one I chose, which was all black. While pink would definitely make this bottle stand out more, in my opinion it looks totally out of place on a hot sauce bottle.
Overall:

Don't expect anything original out of Red Hot Robin's Chipotle Mango Hot Sauce. If you do, you may be mildly disappointed. But if you're on the lookout for a versatile table sauce with a wide range of applications, you'll probably dig this, especially if you crave things on the smokey or sweet side.
Currently the official Red Hot Robin's site is under construction, so you'll have to wait a short while before you're able to order this fine sauce. In the meantime, join Robin's Facebook page to get updates.
