Review - Phoenix Pepper Sauce

xxx Here's a nice, back to basics hot sauce that would do well in a variety of situations and is relatively cheap - Phoenix Pepper Sauce with Tabasco Peppers. It is an ideal candidate for a table sauce when the bigger brands such as Tabasco Brand, Frank's Red Hot, or Crystal hot sauces aren't available.

Ingredients:
No fuss; just only using what's necessary - distilled vinegar, red peppers, and salt.

Aroma:
3 out of 5. Smells of strong vinegar and fresh peppers. It's like Tabasco sauce on steroids.

Appearance and Texture:
3 out of 5. Orange-red in color, this is thin, watery and the epitome of a splashable sauce.

Taste Straight Up:
4 out of 5. Tart and heavy on the vinegar. The taste of tabasco chiles shines through enough to make this more than just a super-sharp n' sour vinegar-fest. There was just a touch of noticeable salt in the flavor. Very pure and spicy. It's like the McIlhenny Company's famous sauce on steroids.

Taste on Food:
For this, I whipped up some simple soft tacos with refried beans, seasoned beef and shredded cheddar for me and my two sons. I doused a good deal of Phoenix Pepper Sauce and folded up the taco. After analyzing the first bite, it was evident that Phoenix held it's own wonderfully against the other ingredients.

Since it does have a powerfully tart taste, this wouldn't go well with anything on the sweet side of the tracks. A food that is considered to be "neutral" or spicier could benefit from a dash or two of Phoenix. It may be a bit too thin for some applications where a thicker or creamier sauce is needed.

Heat:
There's an admirable amount of heat produced by the tabasco peppers. The fire hits you immediately but doesn't linger. Phoenix registers at least 2.5 on a scale of 1 to 5.

Label:
2 out of 5. I wasn't too impressed by it. I couldn't quite put my finger on it - the silver printing, perhaps? - but there was something that made this label look bland and dated in my eyes.

Overall:
There's nothing groundbreaking about the taste but it does it's job and does it well. I snatched a 5 oz. bottle at a local grocery store for $2.00 and thought it was a great buy.

If you're about to do a search online for Phoenix, let me save you some time - there is not a single word of information about it on the web.
