Review - Palo Popcorn Jalapeno Cheddar Cheese Popcorn

Palo Popcorn Jalapeno Cheddar Cheese Popcorn

Just like any average joe-esque, red-blooded American male, I'm content with the salty snacks that have dominated the junk food landscape for decades. I do have to admit that I'm not a huge fan of cheese popcorn. I like the cheesed variety every now and then, but if given my druthers, I'd druther have regular popcorn - you know, the kind that drowning in enough movie theatre buttery oil to be equivalent to the fat quotient of 10 Big Macs. Mmmmmmm! But cheese popcorn? Sure, I can munch on some on occasion.

Palo Popcorn, a Sheboygan Falls, Wisconsin-based popcorn manufacturer, send me one of their cheese-dusted varieties to review. They do offer Premium Cheddar Cheese and White Cheddar Cheese options, but since I'm a chilehead, they thought that I would appreciate their Jalapeno Cheddar Cheese Popcorn, and below are my thoughts on it.

Looking inside the bag, the size of the individual kernels appeared large and uniform. There was a thick coating of the cheese flavoring evenly covering all of the popcorn. In fact, there may almost be "too much" of the orange stuff. I ain't complaining, because I'm the kind of person who will rifle through a bag of potato chips or other snacks in search for the pieces with the most sprinkles on them. Just imagine an entire bag of popcorn where all of the kernels are like those highly sought-after, overly-coated chips. If you like the thought of that, then you'll love Palo Jalapeno Cheddar Cheese Popcorn.

Does it feature substantial taste and/or a heat freak-pleasing burn on the tongue? Well, it's a densely rich cheese flavor to match the visually heavy coating. It has a great cheese tones, and you'll find yourself in a Wisconsin-style heaven if you love a good cheese popcorn. How does the jalapeno come into play? There is some of the standard jalapeno chile taste that you would be familiar with if you've eaten jalapeno snacks before. It does add a light touch of fire, which if you're not used to spicy foods would no doubt pack a small fire in the mouth. Extreme chileheads may feel disappointed. Make no mistake about it; this is made for the masses, so chileheads looking for the most incendiary blaze will have to look elsewhere.

Overall: 4.0 stars

I enjoyed them as much as I could for a cheese popcorn. I would be interested in a stronger heat version (perhaps with cayenne or even habaneros thrown into the mix), but beggars can't be choosey, and these hit the spot.

On Palo's online ordering page several size bags are available for ordering, from 3 oz. to 64 oz., plus a couple of 12-packs to choose from. Nice job, Palo!

Me, I like to sprinkle superhot pepper powders into my microwave popcorn and shake up the bag. It works wonders.

Smoky Mountain Popcorn Co. has a "Slap Yo Mama" flavor that has some decent heat to it the more you eat.
