Review - Miller's Country Crafts Jalapeño Jam
Ingredients:
Sugar, water, jalapeno peppers (jalapeno peppers, water, distilled vinegar, salt, high fructose corn syrup, calcium chloride, garlic powder, sodium benzoate, and sodium metabisuffate [preservative], onion powder, natural flavors, tumeric), vinegar, green peppers (bell peppers, water, citric acid), lemon juice (water, lemon juice concentrate, sodium bisulfite [preservative], sodium benzoate [preservative], lemon oil), pectin, citric acid, artificial color (water, Blue 1, Yellow 5, citric acid, sodium benzoate).
Aroma:
2 out of 5. This jalapeno jelly had a sweet n' sour scent, being simultaneously sugary and lemony. There was the aroma of jalapenos, but since it merged with the smell of the lemon juice's tartness it was difficult to distinctly pick out.
Appearance and Texture:
3 out of 5. The epitome of pure green - even Crayola couldn't make a crayon more green than this. Very translucent, you could see hundreds of bits and shreds of jalapeno peppers ranging in size from 1/8 of an inch down to the tiniest speck. It's consistency is nearly identical to your typical Welch's jelly.
Taste Straight Up:
3 out of 5. Extremely sweet and satisfying. This could almost pass for a grape jelly. There was nary any jalapeno taste at all, in terms of a pure vegetable-like flavor. Surprisingly, Miller's Country Crafts Jalapeno Jam lacks any lemon taste at all despite it's smell. Interestingly, this jam lulls you into a false since of security; a few seconds after taking a bite of this sweet spread, the heat hits you pretty good.
Taste on Food:
3 out of 5. This was very good on a variety of breakfast-type items: regular white bread toast, bagels with cream cheese, and buttered biscuits.
Suggested Uses:
Miller's Country Crafts Jalapeño Jam should go well with these dishes: as a dip for a fried cheese appetizer, bacon-wrapped jalapeño poppers or breaded jalapenos stuffed with cream cheese; as a sweet and spicy glaze for baked or grilled chicken breasts or turkey; with crackers and hors d'oeuvres; or even with peanut butter for a smokin' PB&J sandwich.
Heat:
Contains just enough searing to balance out the sugary flavor. May be too much for young children or those who prefer things to be extremely mild. 2 out of 5.
Overall:
A respectable jam with more enough sweetness and heat to accent a variety of foods. This is not the best pepper jelly/jam I've ever eaten, but I found to serious faults with it.
Miller's Country Crafts, based out of rural Ava, Illinois, apparently makes different jams and preserves. Their products are distributed to Viviano's markets around the St. Louis area. You can call them at the number posted on their website for more information.
