Review - Jimmy Luv's Bloody Mary Mix
Pre-made Bloody Mary mixes strut that fine line between good and bad in my book. They can be extremely convenient; just add alcohol plus a garnish and you're ready to rock. But quite often with that wonderful ease comes a sizable compromise in overall taste.
Here comes another mix hoping to set itself apart from the overcrowded Bloody Mary mix market - it's Jimmy Luv's Premium Blend Bloody Mary Mix. So without further ado, let's see what's "under the hood" of this pre-bottled, tomato-based concoction.
Ingredients:
Water, Tomato Paste, Spice Blend (salt, maltodextrin, spices, dehydrated garlic and onion, sugar, dehydrated horseradish, hydrolyzed corn protein, paprika, spice extractives [including paprika], turmeric, less than 2% silicon dioxide and tricalcium phosphate added to prevent caking), Distilled Vinegar, Worcestershire Sauce (molasses, high fructose corn syrup, anchovies, onion, tamarind, garlic, cloves, chili pepper extract, natural flavors), Hydrolyzed Soy Protein, Steak Sauce (corn syrup, raisins, modified corn starch, spices, orange marmalade base [orange juice, grapefruit juice, pectin, lemon juice, citric acid], orange peel, caramel color), Beef, Sugar, Sodium Benzoate, & Potassium Sorbate (as preservatives), Citric Acid, Xanthan Gum. Contains Soy, Fish (anchovies) and less than 2% sulfates.
Is there anything that's NOT in the ingredients list? Foodie snobs may be cautioned at the inclusion of components such as high fructose corn syrup and sodium benzoate. Fortunately, I don't have such worries as long as I don't go hog wild in consuming hefty amounts of the stuff.
Making a Bloody Mary is very simple. Here is the recipe inscribed on the bottle label in a nutshell:
1. Fill a pint glass with ice
2. Fill the glass to between 1/4 and 1/3 full (1 or 2 ounces) of your favorite vodka, gin or tequila
3. Fill the glass the rest of the way with Jimmy Luv's Bloody Mary Mix.
4. Mix well and add garish.
I followed these instructions to a tee, only creating the drink without a garnish this time out.
Appearance and Texture:
4 out of 5. Jimmy Luv's is a deep, healthy red with colorful spices ranging from black pepper to white onion fragments. Upon sipping the drink, I was greeted by a smooth, rich blend with very little grit.
Taste:
4.5 out of 5. Jimmy Luv knows what he's doing. This may be the best pre-made Bloody Mary mix I've ever had. Loads of tangy, sweet and thick vegetable flavors intermingle with fresh tomato juice and beef tastes. There is a considerable amount of saltiness, but not to the discredit of Jimmy Luv's; I felt it wasn't in-proportional to the other flavor notes in the liquid.
If there was any fault, it would be the utter lack of spiciness in this Bloody Mary mix. I certainly wasn't worried, as I grabbed one of the thirty or forty hot sauce bottles out of my refrigerator. This time it was Scoville Food Institute's Red Savina Hot Sauce. I threw about three heavy splashes of the sauce into the drink and give it a good stir.
The results was nearly perfect, as Jimmy Luv's produces a fantastic counterpart to the Red Savina habanero/vinegar dominance of Scoville Food Institute's condiment. With this great heat and delicious flavor, I kicked back in my recliner and enjoyed good sippin' for the next half hour and took a rare relaxation session.
Label:
3 out of 5. Colorful and almost cartoonish in appearance, it wouldn't be difficult to spot one of these 32 oz. bottles on a store shelf.
Overall Rating:
