Review - Jimi Mac's Super Sauce

Jimi Mac's Super SauceThere's nothing better than when a sauce or a condiment will defy simple categorization and win merely by being a good-tasting additive or topper on its own merits. I've sampled a lot of "happy accidents" that have landed in the "just okay" territory, but when they turn out to be extraordinary it's quite a revelation.

Jimi Mac's Super Sauce certainly fits the bill as difficult to pigeonhole. While it's clearly closer to a mustard (its main ingredient) than anything else, its standout honey, chili sauce and garlic components blur the lines of distinction.

Ingredients:
Mustard (Water, Ground Mustard Seed, Distilled Vinegar, Salt, Algin Derivative Added), Honey, Chili Sauce (Red Chili Peppers, Salt, Garlic, Distilled Vinegar, Potassium Sorbate, and Sodium Bisulfate as Preservatives and Xanthan Gum), Fresh Chopped Garlic, Spices, Salt, Garlic, and Pepper. Contains Sulphite (Sodium Bisulfate).

Aroma:
4 out of 5. Sweet mustard with a mouth-watering charge of chile peppers. Ever so faint that they were, I was able to detect garlic and honey.

Appearance and Texture:
4 out of 5. This looks deep and dark, more along the lines of a tan/orange than a lighter and brighter yellow. It's a little ugly in this regard.

Oodles of chunks of peppers abide in the mixture, similar to the way pieces of salsa poke through when blended in with Velveeta when one makes salsa con queso.

One aspect I love is the consistency. It has an even texture throughout, and really no bottle shaking is required. It may be thick for a hot sauce, but it's runny for a mustard. Neither one of those distinctions are good nor bad, but for what it is, Jimi Mac's Super Sauce is dead-on with a superb consistency for many varying applications.

One other noteworthy thing is the size of the opening on the cap. Pop the lid, and you've got one large hole which is much larger than your typical "one drop at a time" flow restrictor caps. Because of the relative ease at which Super Sauce pours out, you'll have to be extra careful not to extract too much of this at a time.

Taste Straight Up:
3.5 out of 5. This is a very peppery mustard with a touch of sugary sweet. I would have preferred a milder, sweeter honey mustard with a gradual but fierce heat (kind of like a high end and low end dichotomy instead of all these tangy and loud middles). A slight burn hits you rather quickly and a horseradish-similar feeling also comes into play. I can imagine this appealing to a large audience. For me, simply sampling it by itself wasn't enough to blow me away. It was time to try this with some grub.

Taste on Food:
4 out of 5. I drizzled a roast beef sandwich with Jimi Mac's Super Sauce. I thought it was wicked good and provided a minor kick and flavor enhancement. Yet while this sauce was strong enough by itself, the powerful punch I was looking for got lost in the taste of the meat, cheese and bread. By pouring more directly on the bite area before I'd chomp down on it, I was able to get the rush of flavor I was after.

Jimi Mac's Super Sauce

How 'bout some mustardy hot wings? Now this is where this sauce really shined. Honey sweet and tangy with a pungent bluster, some Jimmie Mac's wings had me licking my fingers and craving more.

Heat:
Short bursts of scorch arrive 2-3 seconds after consuming, and in concert with the piquant mustard seed, the chile pepper brings the burn level up to a 2.5 out of 5.

Label:
3 out of 5. The bee poising to sting and the peppers give the impression that this may be a honey-injected chile sauce. Good looking graphics and all, but there's nothing that would jump out at you and tell you this is a mustard-dominated sauce one would scan the ingredients list.

Overall:
Find the right dish or sandwich and you could uncover a winner with Jimi Mac's Super Sauce. Although it aims to be an all-around versatile sauce, I believe it would work far better for certain applications more than others.

I really love how versatile it is. I would recommend this sauce to anyone who likes spicy food, and truthfully it is not that overly spicy.I would rate it a 91/2 out of a possible ten.
