Review - Jersey Boyz Jerky Dorset Naga Dusted Beef Jerky
Here's another good, chewy jerky to sink your teeth into: Jersey Boyz Jerky Dorset Naga Dusted Beef Jerky. It is the Scovie Award winning jerky manufacturer's hottest offering, and is the spiciest dried beef jerky I've ever eaten.
Ingredients:
Unavailable. The bag of jerky I received in the mail had no label.
Price:
$5.00 for a 3 oz. bag. My bag come with not one, but two combination pick/flossers (why don't other jerky makers package this in with their food? It seems as obvious as having a wet wipe at a rib or hot wing eatery).
Aroma:
4 out of 5. Watch out! Don't try to breath in the bag too deeply, or you'll get a load of cough-inducing dorset naga chile dust in your lungs. An individual piece of jerky smells of 90% dried hot pepper and 10% seasoned and smoked beef.
Appearance and Texture:
3.5 out of 5.
The beef was sliced in rough rectangular or triangle shapes approximately 1 1/2 to 2 inches in length (a few were a bit longer). The thickness was about 1/8 of an inch - not too thin and not too thick in my opinion. The color of the meat was a lovely, deep, caramelized brown.
This beef is covered heavily in naga dust and seasoning. This is not just a fine, powdery seasoning; there are huge flakes and seeds smothering the meat strips, plus there's a good deal of it sitting at the bottom of the bag. This is the most generous seasoning I've seen encountered on a jerky. And unlike some other jerkies (you probably know which ones), the coating stuck to the meat very well and wasn't prone to rub or fall off easily.
The texture is a bit tough and dry for me, and I have to knock off a point for it. Not leathery but still a bit laborious to eat. Though if you like very chewy jerkies then this is for you.
Taste:
4.5 out of 5. I liked it. The beef had great flavor that stood up with the intense heat. Although I didn't have an ingredient list, one could still detect a distinguishable soy /Worcestershire sauce taste, plus the right amount of salt. The hotness was the unmistakable star of the show, though.
Heat:
5 out of 5. This has an eye-watering, lip-numbing, make-your-tongue-throb heat. It's almost immediate and long-lasting. Since it uses dorset naga peppers - which at around 750,000 to 800,000 scoville heat units make it the world's second hottest peppers, just under the bhut/naga jolokia chiles' 1 million SHU - this crazily-spicy jerky is for diehard chileheads only. You might be able to each only one or two pieces at a time before taking a break. But I'll be damned, after 15 minutes since your last bite, you'll be craving another piece.
Label:
Unavailble.
Overall:
4 out of 5. If Jersey Boyz Jerky would be able to get slightly more tender cuts of meat, this super-hot beef jerky would be perfect. That minor flaw is not enough for me not to recommend this. If you want to experience this jerky from hell (and I mean that in a good way), go to the
Jersey Boyz Jerky website.
