Review - Jack Links Buffalo Chicken Style Big Dippers Links
Spicy versions of your favorite snacks are about as ubiquitous as air nowadays. And the options are expanding seemingly exponentially, to where it's hard to get a grasp on everything that's available - so much that I've given up on trying to keep up on everything. That having been said, I will still review the occasional mass-market snack product.
This time out it's Jack Links Buffalo Chicken Style Big Dippers Links, which contain buffalo-style chicken jerky links, along with cups of their Buffalo Sauce and Ranch Dressing, both made for dipping. Sounds like an interesting concept. Let's see if this is indeed a fine, guilty pleasure munchie...
Ingredients:
Too much to type out! Refer to the photo instead:
Jerky Appearance, Texture and Consistency:
2.5 out of 5. Each one of these puppies are about the size and shape of a thick french fry. They look orange, simply because there is supposed to be spicy buffalo flavor "built in". These Jack Links Buffalo Chicken Style Big Dippers Links are firm, have decent chewiness and feel like similar beef jerky link products. They are not excessively greasy; and in fact, are at the other end of the moisture spectrum, as these are a bit too dry (I was hoping that the dip would remedy this little inadequacy).
Jerky Flavor:
1.5 out of 5. I don't think these jerky sticks could be more non-descript in their flavor. They taste hardly anything like chicken, or chicken jerky, or even anything "buffalo" or "hot sauce" flavored for that matter. It's like biting into generic dried meat links.
Buffalo Sauce and Ranch Dressing:
1 out of 5. Epic fail of gargantuan proportions. The Buffalo Sauce does have some resemblance of a spicy sauce, but there's such a nightmarish, oily, chemical taste that you'll want to spit it out after putting some on your tongue. The Ranch? NO better, with a flavor that screams with such artificial tones that what most folks would call an "aftertaste" comes as the actual, up-front taste. I'm not joking here...take any open bottle of ranch dressing you may already have in your refrigerator, and you'll have something that tastes ten times as fresh and delicious as the garbage dip that comes with these jerky sticks. The same goes for the buffalo dip. Really, it's that bad.
Heat:
1 out of 5. Totally mild.
Label and Packaging:
4 out of 5. Professional-looking label printed on the plastic/foil cover that peels off. The compartments for the jerky links and two sauces are convenient.
Value:
1 out of 5. You get approximately 7 jerky sticks for around $2.98 or higher at retailers such as Wal-Mart or Walgreens. That's over 40 cents a pop. On "Wing Tuesdays" at Buffalo Wild Wings, you can get hot, fresh wings with decent-tasting sauce for 40 cents a piece. For a ridiculously sub-par product like Jack Links Buffalo Chicken Style Big Dippers Links, that price is a ripoff.
Overall:
Avoid these like the plague. I don't care how curious you are. Instead, if you want to spend your hard-earned greenbacks on Jack Links products, go for one of their flavored beef jerkies.
