Review - Honnie T Original Spicy Garlic Sauce
Here's a unique little sauce that should be required tasting by all flavor fans, even if it might not be ending up their speed: Honnie T Original Spicy Garlic Sauce. Vinny of H.T. Sauce (which is what the company is sometimes abbreviated as) shipped me a bottle of the bright red liquid, which according to their website, has a "beautiful meaning behind it. The word 'Honnie' stands for admirable, special, upbeat and valued; it stands special in everyone's heart. For its traditional flavor and spice, which is always admired and loved by all the customers who taste it. The difference of the sauce is in its exclusive blend of oriental spices, offering your taste buds the unique epicurean experience it has been looking for. The result is a flavorful tangy and spicy sauce with a balanced heat for which it is fondly referred to as 'Honnie T Sauce'.
Sounds moderately intriguing. Did it live up to its flowery hype?
I had originally planned to do an "on location" video review of this sauce on the dinnertime vittles provided by Dolly Parton's Dixie Stampede Dinner & Show in Branson, Missouri, but unbeknownst to me until the last minute, I found out that video recording of any kind was prohibited there on the premises. Instead, I opted to sneak a few still photos of my food. This practice also was forbidden, but I want to give a big thanks to our server Collin, himself a hot sauce fan, for overlooking my picture snapping.
Ingredients:
Sugar, Salt, Garlic, Corn Starch Modified, Spice, Chili Peppers, Xanthan Gum, FC&C Red #40
Aroma:
4 out of 5. Highly sugary and sweetly tangy. Honnie T is somewhat reminiscent of a sweet and sour sauce, a garlicky Asian chili sauce and a rich red French dressing all rolled into one.
Appearance and Texture:
4 out of 5. Beaming red and semi-translucent. It packs quite a few fragments and seeds of chile peppers. The consistency is right on for a wide number of uses, as it's thin enough to pour on just about anything yet is clingy enough to stick to your food. The luminous crimson color is certainly not off-putting although I would have liked to see what Honnie T Sauce would have appeared like without the artificial dye.
Taste Straight Up:
3 out of 5. In almost every way, it was just like the description I gave the aroma, only on my taste buds it didn't translate as well as it did to my nose. It's a sweet blend (perhaps too sugary for some) with some tanginess and mild presence of garlic. In addition to these attributes, it possesses a lovely warm singe from chile peppers on the back swing.
Taste on Food:
4 out of 5. In all fairness, Honnie T Original Spicy Garlic Sauce is an additive and an ingredient more than a stand-alone sauce.
I gave a coating of Honnie T to torn-off pieces of a whole rotisserie chicken. Fantastic! Especially on suck-off-the-bone pieces like wings, freshly cooked chicken is what I think Honnie T was made for.
I then applied the sauce to hickory smoked barbecued pork loin. Not quite as harmonious, as I thought the smoky flavor clashed a bit with the more Asian-style offerings of Honnie T Original Spicy Garlic Sauce. Not bad, but this wasn't the best fit.
When it's firing on all cylinders, Honnie T hits the spot remarkably. I would also recommend it for grilled shrimp or mahi mahi for a zingy, sweet seafood meal.
Heat:
1.5 out of 5. With perhaps around Tabasco-level heat, this product would be tolerable to most fans of spice.
Label:
4.5 out of 5. I love just about everything concerning the label - the fonts, graphics and the ultra-cool, metallic glossiness. A problem lies in the shininess of the text sections; in certain lights, it's difficult to read the words against the goldish sheen.
Overall:
If you're interested in acquiring some for yourself, mosey on over to the H.T. Sauce website and order a 5 oz. bottle for $3.79 plus shipping. If you really like the sauce, you can upgrade to the 14 ouncer (that's right, almost triple the amount) for only $4.88. This is an incredible deal, although as always mail order may be very costly to have items delivered to your doorstep, so refer to their online shopping cart for precise shipping charges to your zip code.
