Review - Frey Supreme Hot Chilli Pepper Dark Chocolate
Here's a yummy little chocolate that I was tipped off to by someone on Twitter (thanks, @dloesch!). Normally I don't go ga-ga for sweets (especially chocolate), but since this, a) is dark chocolate and, b) has chile pepper in it, it's more than enough of a suitable nominee to try out.
What are the ingredients? The back says: "Extra fine dark chocolate with chilli. Ingredients: chocolate, sugar, cocoa butter, dry chilli 2.0 %, emulsifier: soy lecithin, natural flavors. May contain tree nuts, peanuts and milk. Cocoa solids: 55% minimum in chocolate." There's no indication of exactly what kind of chile peppers are in this, but the front of the box has what appears to be red cayenne peppers, and inside the actual has the occasional red pepper speck. The heat is medium (but this would be pretty darn hot to non-chileheads) and goes well with the flavor of the dark chocolate. Now the actual flavor of the chocolate (when nibbling some that doesn't have the presence of peppers) is rather plain - I've tasted dark chocolates that were richer, creamier and densely packed with deeper taste. But the fusion of the chocolate with the heat of the chile is absolutely wonderful. And highly addictive.
My only beef was the goofy packaging. Was this little perforated corner supposed to aide in tearing a section of the container?
Well, no, it really doesn't tear that way. The whole back comes off...
Horseheads on the inside foil.
The entire bar has ten of these squares. Four squares, which add up to 220 calories, make one one suggested serving size. I challenge you to eat only four...
Back of the Frey Supreme Hot Chilli Pepper Dark Chocolate squares.
Break or nibble off a piece, and you'll see lots of pieces of chile seeds.
And the odd dried red pepper skin flakes, too.
As I've often said, the marriage between heat and sweet is one of the best-kept secrets in the food world, and is just primed to explode. Frey Supreme Hot Chilli Pepper Dark Chocolate is another awesome example of it.
I found this at my local Target for $1.60 a bar, marked on clearance from $2.20. I certainly hope this is not an indication of the discontinuation of the product. It would be a shame if it were. Just in case it is, I urge you to run out to your local Target (if there is one nearby your hometown) and grab a few bars before its too late.
