Review - Frey Supreme Hot Chilli Pepper Dark Chocolate

Frey Supreme Hot Chilli Pepper Dark Chocolate

Here's a yummy little chocolate that I was tipped off to by someone on Twitter (thanks, @dloesch!). Normally I don't go ga-ga for sweets (especially chocolate), but since this, a) is dark chocolate and, b) has chile pepper in it, it's more than enough of a suitable nominee to try out.

What are the ingredients? The back says: "Extra fine dark chocolate with chilli. Ingredients: chocolate, sugar, cocoa butter, dry chilli 2.0 %, emulsifier: soy lecithin, natural flavors. May contain tree nuts, peanuts and milk. Cocoa solids: 55% minimum in chocolate." There's no indication of exactly what kind of chile peppers are in this, but the front of the box has what appears to be red cayenne peppers, and inside the actual has the occasional red pepper speck. The heat is medium (but this would be pretty darn hot to non-chileheads) and goes well with the flavor of the dark chocolate. Now the actual flavor of the chocolate (when nibbling some that doesn't have the presence of peppers) is rather plain - I've tasted dark chocolates that were richer, creamier and densely packed with deeper taste. But the fusion of the chocolate with the heat of the chile is absolutely wonderful. And highly addictive.

My only beef was the goofy packaging. Was this little perforated corner supposed to aide in tearing a section of the container?

Well, no, it really doesn't tear that way. The whole back comes off...

The entire bar has ten of these squares. Four squares, which add up to 220 calories, make one one suggested serving size. I challenge you to eat only four...

Break or nibble off a piece, and you'll see lots of pieces of chile seeds.

And the odd dried red pepper skin flakes, too.

As I've often said, the marriage between heat and sweet is one of the best-kept secrets in the food world, and is just primed to explode. Frey Supreme Hot Chilli Pepper Dark Chocolate is another awesome example of it.

I found this at my local Target for $1.60 a bar, marked on clearance from $2.20. I certainly hope this is not an indication of the discontinuation of the product. It would be a shame if it were. Just in case it is, I urge you to run out to your local Target (if there is one nearby your hometown) and grab a few bars before its too late.

I have been a big fan of several of the Frey Chocolate flavors at Target. Being originally from Germany, getting ahold of good chocolate was always difficult until Target (and a few others) started carrying Lindt, RitterSport and especially Frey. Day before yesterday I went to my local Target and with great horror I found no more Frey Chocolates on diplay, none, all gone, not even an empty space indicating it was just low on stock. WHAT IS GOING ON? Didn't have time to ask an associate in the store that evening, but, Please, someone tell me Target didn't just quit carrying it.

Flew down here (Baltimore) from Canada trying to buy some Frey bars at Target. Found Target, but couldn't find a single bar of Frey chocolates anywhere. Settled with Choxie instead. Not sure if it's just that Target store that I went to that doesn't carry Frey or is it that Frey discontinued the distribution channel through Target.

In the meantime I had contacted Target, and they did in fact discontinue carrying Frey Chocolate. They gave me the spill that they like to always keep things fresh and feature new and different products periodically for their customers. I wish they would have been honest and just said we didn't sell enough of it or our aggreement with Frey ended...than give me this BS answer. It seems all the other chocolates are still on the shelf. Oh well. In the meantime I will have to try to find a source on the web. I was waiting for cooler time of the year so the chocolate doesn't melt when it is being shipped, ha,ha!

Still haven't found a source. May email Frey Company and ask if they still have a distributer in the US?!

My boyfriend and I fell in love with the Frey Blueberry and were so disappointed when Target discontinued them. Has anyone found them in the states yet
