Review - Fiery Lime and Hot Mango Gourmet Pretzel Bites by Chocolate Inspirations

Fiery Lime and Hot Mango Gourmet Pretzel Bites by Chocolate Inspirations

Here are a couple of more pieces of evidence that the very welcome trend of "sweet and heat" is slowly catching on. I present to you Fiery Lime and Hot Mango Gourmet Pretzel Bites. They are produced by the confectioner Chocolate Inspirations, who offer an extensive line-up of truffles, barks, and brittles in addition to numerous flavors of small, twice-baked pretzel balls.

The Fiery Lime and Hot Mango are their spiciest variations. Each of these have a light coating of a sugary crust - where the namesake taste and the heat reside - sitting on top of a normal, salt-covered pretzel sphere. For those of you out there that care about such matters, both kinds are vegan-friendly and dairy-free.

Fiery Lime Pretzel Bites

Ingredients:
Pretzels (enriched wheat flour, reduced niacin, reduced iron, thiamine mononitrate, riboflavin and folic acid), salt, natural flavor (partially hydrogenated soybean oil and/or cotton seed oil, natural flavors) vegetable oil (contains one or more of the following: canola, corn, soybean) malt, leaving (contains one or more of the following: yeast, sodium bicarbonate, ammonium bicarbonate) granulated beet sugar, cayenne pepper, natural fiery lime flavor, citric acid, salt. Trans fat - 0. Manufactured in a facility that processes Dairy, Peanuts & Tree Nuts.

I normally don't like hard pretzels larger than the standard snack-sized twists as I find the bigger variety laborious to chew on. Thankfully, these pretzel bites (which are a tad bit greater in size than peas) have more of a "soft" and airy crunch that a typical dry breakfast cereal has.

The cereal comparison doesn't end there, as the very first taste was similar to a nice, sweet citrus-y Froot Loop. A second later a more defined lime taste became more pronounced, possessed no sourness but had a moderate amount of sugariness and even a hint of ginger flavor. The salt that covered the pretzel bites kind of got masked in the taste but occasionally peeked out like sunbeams on a mostly cloudy day.

The overall taste wasn't bad at all. It was kind of like a pretzel and a piece of Trix cereal mated and gave birth to this little ball of happiness.

What about the spiciness? There was very little to speak of, even after nibbling on four or five of these. Only after reaching the dozen mark did the residual heat really let itself be known.

Overall: 3.5 out of 5.

Pretty much identical to the Fiery Lime Gourmet Pretzel Bites in terms of texture and appearance, the Hot Mango Pretzel Bites have more of a deeply sweeter flavor in its coating. It's more candy-like, and is even reminiscent in ways of a Jolly Rangeresque taste. I did not sense any ginger flavor, but this did have the same muted salt presence.

This had a similar slow burn that the Fiery Lime had, but in my estimation the heat level rose a skosh more. Still, it was nothing that would blow the average snack-lover away, and the relatively mild heat was probably designed to prevent those with mild mouths from getting teary-eyed after munching on half of a bag of these.

Overall: 3.5 out of 5.

In Conclusion:

Both of these flavors are ideal for some quick snacking when you desire something with decent flavors, a touch of heat and a moderate crunch. That having been said, neither one are must-haves in my book.
