Review - Dat's Nice Datil Pepper Sauce
Using datil peppers famously grown in the St. Augustine, Florida region, Dat's Nice have conjured up a pepper sauce much like Dat'l Do-It Datil Pepper Hot Sauce both in utility and overall flavor. They were kind enough to send me a bottle for evaluation, and when I received it I was a tad surprised that the container was a heftier 12 ounce size as opposed to something smaller. Did they expect this to be consumed quicker or in larger amounts? It would be fascinating to find out what it is about this sauce that would fulfill either of those conditions.
Ingredients:
Ketchup, Onions, Datil Peppers, Green Bell Peppers, Sugar, Cucumber, Brown Sugar, Roasted Garlic, Rice Vinegar, Red Pepper Rice Vinegar, Natural rice Vinegar, Rice Wine Vinegar, Garlic, Salt, Worcestershire Sauce, Black Pepper
Yes, as you may notice there is no breakdown of ketchup or Worcestershire sauce on the label.
Aroma:
3 out of 5. A whiff reveals the sweet aromas of tomatoes, onions and an almost dill pickle-like sensations of green peppers paired with tart vinegar.
Appearance and Texture:
4 out of 5. Possesses a reddish-brown hue accented by black flecks. This has a great, thick body and is similarly pourable to ketchup, although it's less pasty.
Taste Straight Up:
4.5 out of 5. A zesty tanginess swells in a rich tomato base upon first contact with the tongue. Datil peppers, bell pepper and onions then come forward with their flavors and then give room to small pieces of subdued garlic and black pepper. All in all this was much better and more complex than I anticipated or predicted.
Taste on Food:
4 out of 5. I had grabbed a Philly cheesesteak and french fries. Applied to the sandwich, it melded decently to the taste of the beef, cheese and onions. I typically don't added much of anything (save for some sauteed peppers) to a cheesesteak, the taste of Dat's Nice Datil Pepper Hot Sauce proved to be gentle and mild enough not to distract from the core meat n' cheese yuminess. That having been said, I don't know if something this close to a ketchup - albeit a complicated, peppery one - is what I would normally use as a sandwich enhancer. A hamburger may fare better, though.
The fries, on the other hand, were awesomely good being dipped in Dat's Nice! As an alternative to regular tomato ketchup, I can see me using this with fries and other dippable foods and using quite a bit of this sauce in the process (hence, the need for a bigger bottle of sauce).
Heat:
Datil peppers can be exceedingly spicy. This sauce does not use the full force of the chiles and only employs to them for the flavor of the pods and a fraction of the heat they can provide. On a heat scale of 1 to 5 Dat's Nice Datil Pepper Sauce would rate around 2.5.
Overall:
Bottom line, this is another great datil sauce. Go to http://www.datsnicehotsauce.com for more info or to order.
