Review - Brother Kane Hot Sauce and Jalapeno Potato Chips
My first product review of 2010 was Brother Kane Buffalo Wing Bleu Cheese Potato Chips, a non-offensive, middle-of-the-road yet smooth and creamy-tasting snack that I've eaten a few times since and which with I've been generally pleased. It stirred up a moderate amount of interest from not only people who had left comments but from folks who had actually called my phone number thinking that I personally had manufactured these! During this past Spring, it would not be exaggeration to say that I received at least one call per week regarding the Buffalo Wing Bleu Cheese chips, and I still on occasion will have someone dialing me up inquiring about where they can purchase "my" product.
But let's get to the review at hand. Brother Kane has a few more spicy-themed potato chips in their stable of munchies other than the Buffalo Wing Bleu Cheese, and they were generous enough to ship a large bag of each to have me try them out. They are the Brother Kane Hot Sauce Potato Chips and the Brother Kane Jalapeno Potato Chips. Both are made for and marketed towards a broad, general demographic, so for the most part I'm going to take that perspective to see how they hold up as an all-around spicy snack for the masses.
Brother Kane Hot Sauce Potato Chips
I gingerly opened up the bag of these and noticed how strikingly these smelled of a Louisiana-style hot sauce. This is certainly not a negative, especially of you love the tartness and bite of your everyday Trappey's, Tabasco, Crystal, and Louisiana Brand condiments. Even more striking was the look and texture of the chip. These Hot Sauce-flavored chips (and the Jalapeno Potato Chips below) are flat and relatively thin cut whereas the previously reviewed Brother Kane Buffalo Wing Bleu Cheese Potato Chips are thicker and ridged. Most of the time I don't have a preference either way as I consider taste a far more important factor.
So what about the taste of these? Upon munching on a couple of chips, it seemed to me that the flavor matched the aroma almost dead-on. A bright, sour blast of vinegar hit my tongue with a light layer of peppery heat trailing not too far behind. The salt level is about what's expected in a potato chip - medium to medium-high, and it wasn't too distracting or overpowering. I'm not a fan of salt and vinegar chips, but this flavor with the added extra benefit of a pepper presence made it much more tolerable and even good. Although Hot Sauce Potato Chips aren't quite delicious enough to cross over into the realm of utter addictiveness, there's not much that I could complain about with these.
I would rank the burn level of these chips a 1.5 on a scale of 1 to 10. A person who normally can't take a lot of pungent spice may be able to tolerate these, but there is some residual warmth.
Bottom line on these? They're great chips that are just missing that one elusive ingredient to making them a must-eat.
Overall score: 4 out of 5.
Brother Kane Jalapeno Potato Chips
It was time to crack the second bag open. I took a quick whiff of the chips in the bag and found no real substantial aroma. These thin, flat chips had far of the flavor coating than the Hot Sauce version yet seemed to contain less blustery flavor. There's a decent taste, with the typical powdery jalapeno flavoring taste most are familiar with if they're experienced snack food junkies. There exists a smidgen of heat and some hints of other spices buried in the mix.
I found the Jalapeno Potato Chips to possess a much smoother, easy-going taste of these two I'm reviewing but had even less of the "wow" factor than the Hot Sauce ones did. I would have preferred a more lucid jalapeno presence or even a bit of a cheddar cheese flavoring added to really perk these up. As is, these would not be something I would purchase very frequently.
Overall score: 2.5 out of 5.
