Review - 2 Brothers Salsa

2 Brothers Salsa

2 Brothers SalsaAh, nothin' like a good salsa. 2 Brothers Salsa's Wayne Brawley, whom I interviewed a few months ago, has been making the stuff for over 10 years. He's racked up a few awards for his product (including a 1st place at the 2006 Houston Hot Sauce Festival). It's been many a moon since I had discovered a great new salsa to add to the pantheon of my favorite tomato-based chunky mixes. Therefore I was quite eager to dive into 2 Brothers Salsa Medium Chipotle Salsa.

Ingredients:
Tomato, Jalapeno, Chipotle Peppers (Tomato Puree, Vinegar, Onion, Sunflower Seed Oil, Sugar, Salt, Spices), Citric Acid, Cilantro, Garlic, Salt, Spices

Aroma:
3 out of 5. This was smoky, heavy on the tomatoes with a tinge of onion. Standard fare but there was nothing that blew me away.

Appearance and Texture:
2.5 out of 5. Good healthy reddish-brown color abides here. One aspect of chipotles or fire-roasted tomatoes I love is the dark specks they leave in sauces and salsas. For some reason these black flakes are like beautiful little accents in a sea of red.

2 Brothers Salsa

What about consistency? Those who know me well possess the knowledge that I adore think, chunky salsas. Give me luscious, meaty pieces of tomatoes, peppers, onions, garlic and cilantro! I don't like runny, drippy mush. Unfortunately, 2 Brothers resembles the later, as it's a bit too thin and pureed similar to a thick hot sauce. It's because of this that 2 Brothers Salsa might work on foods as a sauce and not as a scoopable dip on chips.

Taste Straight Up:
4 out of 5. This is quite good, with an immediate mild heat that coats the entirety of the tongue and inner cheeks. A light chipotle savoriness arrives next and meets a tomato richness, and onions and jalapeno peppers hit your taste buds several seconds later. This concoction isn't too salty nor is too heavy-handed in it's employment of any ingredients. Nice overall balance.

Heat:
Rates a 2 on a scale of 1 to 5. Comfortably warm and is nowhere near tear-inducing levels of burnage, pretty much what one would expect from a true chipotle salsa.

Taste on Food:
Excels on Mexican food. If you're the kind of person who regularly coats or fills their burritos, enchiladas or tacos full of salsa, I couldn't think of another salsa that would do a better job both with its flavor and smooth heat. In this regard, 2 Brothers Mild Chipotle Salsa should be (for lack of a better term) a "table salsa" if your household normally feasts on Southwestern or Mexican grub.

As I've mentioned above, I don't feel this would be a good fit for tortilla chips. After a dip it's difficult to grab a sizable portion without most of it running off the chip.

Wayne currently sells Mild and Medium versions of his Chipotle-flavored salsa, and in addition to brick and mortar shops, he sells the product online at http://www.2brotherssalsa.com.

Thank you very much for the great review. It's always good for me to hear other's opinions. I do use it ALOT in my cooking, and as a sauce for foods, so I think you hit the nail on the head there. Hope to see you in Louisiana, we will be there!
