Review - 1st Degree Burn Blazin Jalapeno and 2nd Degree Burn Fiery Buffalo Doritos

1st Degree Burn Blazin Jalapeno and 2nd Degree Burn Fiery Buffalo Doritos

As if no further evidence were needed that spiciness is becoming mainstream, Doritos is making yet another dash into the world of incendiary foods. A few years ago they had released a relatively hot snack chip called Fiery Habanero that I admired. It was discontinued about a year after its debut, but by a lot of reports it's come back into select markets. Unfortunately I can't get my hands on a bag here in the Missouri area.

This time out Doritos has released a nationwide line called Degree Burn with three different flavors and heat levels. Two of them, called 1st Degree Burn Blazin' Jalapeno and 2nd Degree Burn Fiery Buffalo, are widely available across the United States. The third entry in this line, 3rd Degree Burn Scorching Habanero, is still that ever so elusive snack chip that may not be purchasable in all geographic areas. But rest assured as soon as I find it I'll be reviewing it here.

Until that fateful day comes, here is my take on the 1st Degree Burn Blazin' Jalapeno and 2nd Degree Burn Fiery Buffalo Doritos.

1st Degree Burn Blazin' Jalapeno Doritos

1st Degree Burn Blazin Jalapeno Doritos Chips

Ingredients: Whole corn, vegetable oil (corn, sunflower, and or soybean oil), corn maltodextrin, salt, whey, natural flavors, sodium diacetate, jalapeno pepper powder, monosodium glutamate, dextrose, sugar, cream, butter (cream, salt), cornstarch, onion powder, spices, canola oil, modified cornstarch, sour cream (cultured cream, nonfat milk), cheddar cheese (milk, cheese cultures, salt, enzymes), artificial color (including: Yellow 6 Lake, Yellow 6, Yellow 5, Red 40, Blue 1), Swiss cheese (milk, cheese cultures, salt, enzymes), Colby cheese (milk, cheese cultures, salt, enzymes), paprika extract, Monterey Jack cheese (milk, cheese cultures, salt, enzymes), and artificial colors.

Thoughts: My theory is, that with a few exceptions most Doritos are just variations of their nacho cheese flavor. These Blazin' Jalapeno chips are one of the exceptions. These have more of a lighter yellow color than their nacho cheese counterparts. Flavor wise they're smooth and contain a minimalistic amount of jalapeno flavor enough to be named after the chili pepper. I was a bit stunned; there was a small burn hit me right away, but the heat level never climbed up above 1.5 or 2.0 on a scale of 1 to 5. I would say that if you would want a nice little snack with just a touch of a burn, this would be all right.

The taste of these are good enough and likable enough to spur on further munching until you plow through a whole bag of these. In the end I guess that last aspect is the most important thing, as the flavor has been there in order for to be considered a worthy snack. After chomping on a few of these I could definitely taste a bit of the distinctive grassy flavor of jalapeno peppers intertwined with the light cheesy breeziness.

Of course, if Doritos is going to advertise the burn, then we do have to possess some significant burn. I'm happy to report that there is some burn here; of course just like the typical chilehead I would have liked for things to have been hotter with these. The level of “1st Degree” is probably accurate when taking into consideration the target market with these: the vast throngs of citizens who put a drop of Tabasco on their morning eggs and believe that Spicier Nacho Doritos are "hot" chips.

Overall score: 4 out of 5.

2nd Degree Burn Fiery Buffalo

2nd Degree Burn Fiery Buffalo Doritos Chips

Ingredients: Whole corn, vegetable oil (contains one or more of the following: corn, soybean, and/or sunflower oil), salt, sodium diacetate, corn maltodextrin, palm oil, spices, monosodium glutamate, in powder, autolyzed yeast extract, natural and artificial flavor, sugar, canola oil, garlic powder, whey protein isolate, corn syrup solids, artificial color (including: Yellow 6 Lake, Yellow 5 Lake, Red 40), citric acid, nonfat milk, sodium caseinate, lactose, lemon juice solids, lactic acid, disodium inosinate, disodium guanylate, and buttermilk.

Thoughts: I think this is even more off the track as far as being dissimilar to nacho cheese Doritos but oddly enough it has a little bit of a cheese type of flavor. Unfortunately, most of the flavor is masked by this weird artificial Buffalo sauce taste. It certainly by no means was disgusting, before snack chip that was in Dorito's hopes to be addictive? I think not.

The heat on these might be just a touch hotter than the Blazin' Jalapeno, but it certainly doesn't make them any more worthy of chip nor would I really recommend these. I've tasted far better Buffalo wing flavored corn and potato chips - take for instance Blair's Death Rain variety - and even some of the mediocre ones in that vein are much better than these.

Overall score: 2 out of 5.

I liked the jalapeno one better too. I do not like buffalo flavored things other than the chicken it belongs on. Never liked it on those snyder pretzels nor on pizza. It is good news that they have a 3rd degree habanero version, I hope it comes this way. The Fiery Habanero Doritos that came out here at Wal-Mart last couple of months is now gone again. Teasing is not good on chilehead postal workers.

I spoke with one of the consumer realtions ladies at Frito-Lay, she stated the 3rd Degree Doritos are currently on backorder due to some of the ingredients, and will be re-released on July 12th.

I'll translate for John...

"currently on backorder due to some of the ingredients" = "they ran out of jolokia powder!"

I wish...:-)

I tried the 2nd Degree Burn Fiery Buffalo and was quickly hit with what i described to a freind as a "fake heat" I think the lemon juice solids really are tart and try to fool your tongue/brain into thinking its heat. but by the time the bag was gone, my mouth hurt. not from heat either. weird.

jon whaley ( and anyone else with this problem),

i was a huge fan of the fiery habenero doritos and even drove 45 minutes away to get my hands on a bag!! so, when i saw the new line of spicey snacks, i was stoked.

unfortunately, after downing a small bag of fiery buffalo, my mouth was soar. not really thinking, i ate the other bag of buffalo i had bought a few days later. now, my mouth (the entire top) is red and bloated. i took pictures nc it wad hard to see. everything i eat and drink hurts my mouth...mainly salty items.

has anyone else experienced this?????????

thanks!!

The 1st degree burn jalapeno chips are my new favorite chip. There super spicy for a dorito and the burn only lasts about 5 minutes. Perfect!
