Letter From the UK - July 2010
We have now published over 500 articles in the UK and to celebrate we have collected together some hot sauces which we are going to send to one lucky UK reader at the end of the month.
Our site also moved in to fourth place behind the Chilli Farm Web sites in the UK top Chilli web sites, it was also reported in the UK press that Chilli sales in the UP had grown by 600% with one farm producing over a million Dorset Naga Chillies per week.
But the big event this month was GrillStock 2010 the UK's first BBQ show, which included a marquee from Fiery Foods who organised their truly awesome Chilli eating competition which on the first day ended in a draw after two contestants both put 6.4 million SHU extract on their tongues for 10 seconds. You can read the review and see the pictures at http://www.chilefoundry.co.uk/2010/07/19/fiery-foods-chilli-eating-competitions-grillstock-bristol-2010/.
Recipes
We only published a couple of recipes this month; one was a UK version of a USA recipe for Chilli Corn Bread Recipe and the other was very English with a twist a Simple Recipe for Chilli Sherry, if you have not tried it, it is worth a go, if it is not to your liking, it is always good to add to cooking.
Product Reviews
Darth Naga reviewed The Chilli Pepper Company's Naga Viper which was one of the first products we had seen in their new branding, The Chilli Pepper Company make some of the best sauces in the UK, I don't think we have tasted a bad one yet.
This year seems to be the year for Jams, I reviewed a Chipotle Chilli Jam from Atkins and Potts unusually for a Chilli Based product it has won a Gold Great Taste Award in 2006, not many chilli product in the UK win awards in non chilli based competitions, so it was not surprising that this had a great flavour and little heat.
We now have a La Costena Distributor in the UK. They have sent us a small batch of products to review, and as yet the labels are not suitable for the UK market. But the product I am sure will sell very well, as we have a big upswing in interest in Mexican cuisine in the UK at the moment with burrito and Mexican restaurants springing up all over the place. I reviewed their Salsa Mexicana Casera; it was not bad at all compared to the product we currently have in our supermarkets.
