All the Spicy Foods Found in My Local Supermarket - A Photo Documentation

This, like many other ideas I conjure up for blog posts, struck me out of the blue.

The topic is, what is every single spicy item for sale at my local grocery store? I know that more and more foods made "hot" by chile peppers are gaining huge acceptance in the mainstream populace. It's interesting to see the contrast from what grocers offered 20, 10, and even as little as 5 years ago. It was difficult to spot little more than a few cayenne-style pepper sauces. Now the fiery edibles are becoming for and more prevalent down many supermarket aisles.

Shop N' Save - Fenton, MissouriFor this demonstration of what can be found at the typical American grocery store, I chose the place I patronize for most of my basic food shopping: Shop N' Save in Fenton, Missouri. Yes, before you say anything, I realize there are numerous other retailers around the St. Louis metropolitan area that specialize in cuisine from cultures more atuned to spiciness, e.g. Asian or Indian food. What's more, there are other retail chains that have shown some surprising pushes towards super-hot heat; one outstanding example are the dried bhut jolokia AKA ghost chile pepper pods I once found at Dierberg's. And numerous other smaller grocers and specialty/gourmet shops offer some scorching fare. So instead of going for the extremes or establishments with an inclination towards the more exotic, I wanted to see what homogonized, middle-America had on sale for chileheads.

What do I define as fiery or spicy food? It's simply anything made more pungent by the heat of chile peppers, whether it be sauces, salsas, frozen/refrigerated/dry processed foods or prepared foods in the deli. Items that might have fit within a broad category such as Asian food or Mexican weren't necessarily deeemed spicy; therefore just because there are frozen burritos for sale doesn't mean they're a "fiery food". It they're labeled or considered to be "spicy," or for instance are said to be "jalapeno" flavored, then I will include them.

I'll go aisle by aisle and see what I can spot. As a journeyed around the store in the typical counter-clockwise fashion, first up was the Deli section beside the Produce department.

Produce

And here we walk around to the Produce department. There are plenty of fresh chile peppers for most peoples' basic needs. These include green jalapenos, red jalapenos, fresnos, serranos, habaneros, anaheims, poblanos and bells.

And we leave the right side of the store and mosey over to the back wall where there are refrigeration units containing processed meats.

Ethnic Foods, Condiments and Sauces

Next I dived down the aisles of dry/boxed/jarred/bottled goods. Here at Shop N' Save, bottled sauces and condiments can be found in different areas, starting with Hispanic foods.

Spicy Snacks

Let's see what's down the extenstive snack chip aisle. While I'm surprised not to see more of the hotter offerings found at other supermarkets and convenience stores, there was enough salsa and chips that contained jalapeno, buffalo or chipotle flavoring of some sort to feed a small army.

Spicy Snacks at End Cap Displays and Other Areas

This was the biggest surprise I found at the market. It seemed like every where I turned around, there were an assortment of spicy potato chips, tortilla chips and salsa at "end caps" (the end of aisles) and hanging up for a quick grab n' go.

For those that doubt that salsa is the largest selling condiment in the United States, it's hard to notice all these other areas where salsas are on display...and ketchup isn't. By volume, there is far more salsa on sale at Shop N' Save.

What Do YOU Think?

I know there are big differences in what is featured in major American grocery stores. How do you local stores differ?

And what is your reaction to what I unearthed? Post it in the comments below!

Nice article, your market is better at the fresh produce, up north where I live they have crappy mexican produce.

The Mrs, Renfros Ghost was a surpise to me at my market also, I snatched up a couple thinking it might not last long...

Awesome writeup! Turns out you have a lot more spicy snacks than we have here on the East Coast! I'm going to have to pay more attention next time I go to Harris Teeter!

I can get Mrs Renfro's Habanero, but I've never seen the Ghost Pepper sauce. I'm kind of curious to try that though.

Your store is definitely a bit larger than ours is, and your prices seem to be about half of ours too.

Big Y in Western MA has Mrs. Renfro's Ghost Pepper salsa--in fact, they actually have a "Spicy" section in one aisle with the usual pickled peppers, salsas, BBQ sauces, and some hot sauces including four varieties of Big Papi's, which seems modeled on some of the Blair sauces...this includes, surprisingly, an extract sauce. It is my hope that some time in the near future groceries will stock things such as CaJohn's Trinidad pepper sauces and salsas, so I don't have to pay those shipping charges. A man can dream.

That's a great assortment of spicy stuff! Nice store.

Kudos to your photos, they look great.

Best thing I saw? A "box of liquid nacho cheese". I gotta get me one of them!

This was probably the most generic, bland assortment of spicy stuff out of any major supermarket chain in the St. Louis area. Even my local Wal-Mart Supercenter - in a town that's 95% white - has dried, bagged chiles and powders.

Now I'm hungry!

I noticed the pic of Hoffman's Pepper Jack cheese in the Deli. The Kroger here in Ohio has a "Super Hot" version which is my favorite, along with just a "Hot" one. You can also get them by the slice.

Hi Matt,
I live in Western MA and have never seen any Mrs Renfros at any Big Y. I tend to do a lot of shopping at Big Y too (because they have the best meat department, and a good selection of organic foods as well).

Which Big Y did you go to?

That is one of the stores I hit in Fenton as well. Howdy, neighbor! Dierbergs carries Cabot brand Habanero cheese which is awesome!

Also, try the Wild Harvest brand Spicy Blue Corn chips at SNS. They aren't mind-blowing but they DID catch me way off guard in level of spice. The more you eat the spicier they taste.

Off topic, but I like that our Walmart now carries both Arthur Bryant and Fiorello Jack Stack bbq sauces from KC now.

How have I never run into you in that store??.

@jon whaley - I agree. I did notice Jennifer Aniston behind the chips. Hot! <chuckle>

I still think the Shop n Save is a pretty nice store for spicy condiments compared to what we have here.

Scott, count your blessings.... it could be a Food Lion that if you are *lucky* might have a Mexican foods isle. And as usual here at our Food Lion, the Huy Fong Sriracha is sold out as well. :)

Footnote: the Bufalo sauces can be quite HOT. Crack open the Chipotle and tell me it's not.

Dean,

This was at the Big Y in Northampton, MA. I believe they have Mrs. Renfro's at the Amherst one as well. Both stores have a "spicy" section across, I think, from the canned tomatoes and next to the Mexican foods. They (and Stop & Shop) also carry Cabot Habanero Cheddar. Need I say mmmmmm?

Looks like I need to hit Shop N Save to get my salsa stuff. They seem to have a good produce area, including the red jalapenos and the Fresno peppers. I made a salsa once from peppers my wife bought at a farm-stand and they were either Fresno or red jalapenos and it ended up being the best salsa I made in terms of taste. I've never been able to duplicate it. I don't like a ton of heat so much, although I do like heat in my wings, but this was a bold flavor that I've not gotten since in many tries.

Hey Matt,

Try Marshalls and WholeFoods in Hadley. Marshalls has Melindas XXXtra Hot Habanero, Naga Jolokia, and XXXtra Reserve. Whole Foods next door has Frontera habanero salsa (not that hot, but very good), and has Melinda's XXXtra Hot Habanero for $2.69 normal price and $2.19 on sale when I was there -- can't beat that

Dean- thanks for the tip, esp. on the Melinda's Naga Jolokia. One of my favorites, and it's pretty expensive at Faces in Northampton. I can easily find out how much it is at Marshall's--I'm about 2 minutes from there as I type. I'll try that Frontera salsa--I've heard good things.
